WHAT TO EXPECT: The PADI Instructor training process is divided into two parts- the Assistant Instructor (AI) and the Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) program. The combination of both programs makes up a complete Instructor Development Course (IDC). The purpose of the IDC is to teach you, the Instructor Candidate, how to teach PADI programs. In order to successfully complete the IDC, a candidate must:
1. Attend and participate in all IDC curriculum presentation sessions.
2. Present at least four evaluated knowledge development teaching presentations. Candidate needs to score at least a 3.5 or higher on one academic teaching presentation.
3. Present at least four evaluated confined water teaching presentations. Candidate needs to score at least a 3.4 or higher on one confined water teaching presentation
4. Present at least two integrated (two skills each, four total) evaluated open water teaching presentations. Candidate needs to score at least a 3.5 or higher on each skill.
5. Demonstrate competence at performing all 20-dive skills listed on the Skill Evaluation. Candidates must score 3 or more on all skills.
6. Perform a 800-yard non-stop swim with mask, fins, and snorkel.
7. Score 75 percent or higher on all five sections of the Instructor Preassessment Exam.
Completion of the IDC or (OWSI) course makes candidates eligible to participate in a PADI Instructor Examination (IE). The PADI IE is a two day standardized evaluative program designed to test and qualify candidates as PADI Instructors.
