Navy barges were floating accommodations for US troops during WWII. After the war, the navy sunk the barges on a sandy bottom. Most dives take place on two of the five submerged barges in the immediate area. The wrecks provide homes for spider crabs, moray eels, lizardfish, angelfish, rock beauties and parrotfish. Stingrays are often found on the sand and grass bottom during the day. From June through September, large nurse sharks are found around the wreckage giving birth to their young while Sergeant Major diligently guard their purple-colored egg patches to prevent the next generation from being eaten by hungry predators.
