St. Thomas Diving Club is the oldest and most experienced PADI 5 Star IDC Training facility in the Virgin Islands and is located right on the beach at Bolongo Bay Beach Resort. Pool, classrooms and boat departure dock are located on the property.
“Extras” Are Included: There is no need for IDC Prep Courses as the IDC “Plus” is included within the IDC time frame. The IDC “Plus” is a special preparation course designed to help you review theory information prior to the IE Exams.
Meet Your Course Director:
Pam Balash, with a proven track record of over 25 years experience training instructors in the Virgin Islands, knows the resort dive industry. Pam has trained many of the dive store owners, managers and instructors in the U.S.V.I. Pam was formerly on staff at the PADI International College in Santa Ana, CA., and has been appointed by PADI as District Course Director and IE Coordinator for the USVI since 1989. She was recently given her 25 year award as a PADI Course Director.
PADI INSTRUCTOR TRAINING COURSE FACT SHEET
TIME: Registration and orientation will begin at 8:30 AM. All other days will start at 8:00 AM and will end near 6 PM.
HOW TO REGISTER: Forward your Forward your Medical Form and completed IDC application along with a non-refundable deposit of $200 to the Course Director as soon as possible. PADI Divemaster rating is required for attendance at the IDC/IE. Full payment is required prior to the beginning of the program. Prior to the start of the IDC, you must complete 16 required IDC Knowledge Reviews from the Candidate Workbook.
WHAT TO EXPECT: The PADI Instructor training process is divided into two parts- the Assistant Instructor (AI) and the Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) program. The combination of both programs makes up a complete Instructor Development Course (IDC). The purpose of the IDC is to teach you, the Instructor Candidate, how to teach PADI programs. In order to successfully complete the IDC, a candidate must:
1. Attend and participate in all 20 IDC curriculum presentation sessions. Refer to the attached training record form.
2. Present at least four evaluated knowledge development teaching presentations. Candidate needs to score at least a 3.5 or higher on one academic teaching presentation.
3. Present at least four evaluated confined water teaching presentations. Candidate needs to score at least a 3.4 or higher on one confined water teaching presentation
4. Present at least two integrated (two skills each, four total) evaluated open water teaching presentations. Candidate needs to score at least a 3.5 or higher on each skill.
5. Demonstrate competence at performing all 20-dive skills listed on the Skill Evaluation. Candidates must score 3 or more on all skills.
6. Perform a 800-yard non-stop swim with mask, fins, and snorkel.
7. Score 75 percent or higher on all five sections of the Instructor Preassessment Exam.
Completion of the IDC or (OWSI) course makes candidates eligible to participate in a PADI Instructor Examination (IE). The PADI IE is a two day standardized evaluative program designed to test and qualify candidates as PADI Instructors.
WHAT TO BRING: You will need and be expected to have all of the required course materials including, but not limited to, the following: PADI Instructor Manual; Candidate Workbook: Cue cards for Open Water Course (both confined and open water); PADI Open Water Diver, Advanced, Rescue and Divemaster textbooks; Recreational Dive planners (both table and the wheel); the Encyclopedia of Diving and the Diving Knowledge Workbook, Best of the Undersea Journal.
You will also need to bring your own personal gear. Following is a suggested list of required equipment: Mask, fins, snorkel, BCD, regulator, alternate air source, submersible pressure gauge or computer, appropriate exposure protection, timing device, depth gauge, compass, knife or diver’s tool (underwater recall device), slates and and two emergency signaling devices (i.e. whistle and signaling mirror). Bring sufficient clothing and personal effects to be able to maintain a professional appearance for the duration of the course.
Tanks and weights will be provided for the IDC training.
